Knoll Sustainable Wood Policy
Here are some important results of our efforts:
- No ozone–destroying chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
- CFC emissions eliminated
- VOC emissions reduced by 75% plus in wood–finishing operations and 99% in metal–coating operations
- VOC emissions reduced by 99% in adhesive operations
- Safe above–ground storage tanks for solvents protect against contamination
- Low Nox burners and energy–efficiency programs have significantly reduced nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions
- All hardwoods used in furniture from North American managed forests
- 100% of reconstituted veneers made of wood from well–managed forests
- Knoll has earned FSC Chain of Custody certification
- Use of chromium eliminated in all water–treatment operations
- Counter–flow mechanisms installed in powerwash systems have minimized the discharge of phosphates
- Water recycled in closed–loop water treatment processes; water collected in roof run–off system
- Storm water management plans help eliminate water contamination during storm events at manufacturing facilities
- More than 16 million gallons of waste–water treated in 2000 in state–of–the–art facilities
- Clean air standards far exceed federal and state requirements
- Save 17,500 trees per year through paper conservation
- Knoll annually removes from the waste stream 75,000 wood pallets, 41 tons wood scrap, 790 tons sawdust, 275 tons of fabric scrap, 91 tons of paper, 6700 gallons waste oil and 395 gallons of solvent
- Lease program returns product to Knoll for recycling or refurbishing for a second life
