Environmental aspects were incorporated into the Life chair early in the design process. During the design process, Knoll conducted a
thorough analysis to ensure minimal negative environmental impact throughout the chair’s life cycle. The result of this approach is a chair
that uses minimum materials in its construction, and employs clean manufacturing technology such as integral coloring on plastic components,
burnishing on the aluminum structure and zero VOC paints and adhesives. Raw materials with a recycled content of 52–64 percent, depending on
model, are used.
Production process
Manufactured using clean technologies:
- Integral color in plastic components
- Burnished aluminum structure requires no coating
- Other coatings virtually VOC free
- Adhesives virtually VOC free
- Returnable packaging used for component parts
Materials
- Uses minimum amount of materials in construction
- Raw materials have recycled content of 52% (plastic version) and 64% (aluminum version)
- 70–80% of component parts readily recyclable
- Available with 100% recycled content fabric
