Bespoke Schultz Petal Table and Bertoia Bird Chairs from Knoll Created for (RED) Auction

November 26, 2013

A bespoke red Schultz Petal Coffee Table and four Bertoia Bird Chairs from Knoll, which were selected and customized by Jony Ive and Marc Newson, sold at the (RED) Auction for $75,000 on November 23, 2013 at Sotheby's New York.

Including the Petal Coffee Table and Bird Chairs, over 40 pieces were auctioned, raising $13.1 million.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matched each bid, bringing the grand total to $26.2 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Organized by musician and philanthropist Bono in collaboration with Ive and Newson, the auction featured "icons of design selected by Jony and Marc that were personally customized by the pair.” Two unique items created by Ive and Newson were also included – a Leica Digital Rangefinder Camera and an aluminum desk produced by Neal Feay Studio.

“When you think of Jony and Marc, you think of design which is both iconic and sublime. Those two words can be applied to the unique collection of objects on the auction block,” said Bono.

Photos of the objects taken by Andrew Zuckerman, a renowned photographer and filmmaker, were used to create a limited-edition auction catalogue. Designed by Richard Allan, the catalogue includes essays by Stephen Fry and Bono, as well as commentary from Jony and Marc.
