The Meticulously Executed Design of the Olivares Aluminum Chair Celebrated

September 2, 2013

Design Milk and The Gilded Owl, two design blogs, celebrate the new Olivares Aluminum Chair from Knoll. Designed by Jonathan Olivares, the chair’s refined sculptural presence and contemporary color palette are suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments alike.

“Industrial designer and design researcher Jonathan Olivares set out on a mission to design the perfect outdoor chair for Knoll—one that was not too heavy or too light,” notes Design Milk writer Caroline Williamson. “He also wanted it to be more comfortable than all the others and one that would work indoors as well.”

The chair is composed of a die-cast aluminum body-contoured shell and extruded aluminum legs; plastic connections tie the pieces together and allow the chairs to stack neatly without scratching.

“The chair is only three millimeters thick at its thinnest spots and at the widest points it’s nearly three times that,” continues Williamson, “and under 15 pounds, which is less than the Bertoia [side] chair.”

The chair’s gracefully contoured form is carefully shaped to offer maximum comfort.

“Every once in a while a chair comes along that is destined to become a classic,” writes interor designer Andy Goldsborough for The Gilded Owl. “Jonathan Olivares’ new indoor/outdoor chair for Knoll is just that.”

The features a die-cast aluminum body-contoured shell and extruded aluminum legs, which Goldborough describes as “beautifully crafted.”

“Knoll’s design team and engineering experts partnering with Olivares’ studio have launched a chair that is both visually arresting, comfortable but certainly packs a powerful punch with color,” says Goldsborough.
