WIRED magazine features two new designs from Knoll, the Washington Skeleton™ Chair by David Adjaye and the Olivares Aluminum Chair by Jonathan Olivares, in its 2013 Design Life issue. WIRED magazine, which covers current and future trends in technology, includes the Washington Skeleton Chair™ and the Olivares Aluminum Chair in a roundup of the year's "top gadgets and gear for your dining room.”
The Olivares Aluminum Chair is constructed of die-cast aluminum and finished with “scratch and UV resistant” powder coat paint, making it “equally suitable for your breakfast nook or back patio,” writes Joanna Pearlstein of WIRED.
The chair’s shape reflects a balance between structure and weight. It must be comfortable for long periods of sitting, but also light enough to move but heavy enough not to blow over outdoors. “There’s even a hole in the middle of the seat to let rainwater drain,” Pearlstein notes.
The issue also includes an interview with Jonathan Olivares, who discusses inspiring spaces and designs. Designing is "very much like cooking. You’re constrained by cost, available resources, audience and setting. You test a lot to get it right but finally someone gets to enjoy it,” Olivares said when asked to describe the design process to non-designers.
The Washington Skeleton™ Chair was introduced in October 2013 at the Knoll Shop in New York City. The chair establishes a play between propping and balancing while achieving a functional and sculptural presence. Constructed of aluminum, Washington Skeleton™ chairs features a fine geometric lattice design on its back and seat. The chair is available in two finishes -- a powder coat finish or copper plating that will naturally patina with age, are both suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
A copper Washington Skeleton™ chair will be on display at the WIRED Store in New York City through December 22, 2013. For over eight years, the WIRED Store has been a playground of products curated for a young, sophisticated, trend-setting customer. This year's holiday and VIP destination is a "social retail experience." Located at 353 West 14th Street, the WIRED store is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 12pm – 8pm.
