This remarkable project involved the conversion of a nearly 40-year-old shopping mall in northwest Charlotte, NC, into a LEED® certified government services center for Mecklenburg County. With green features that include generous daylight, low-VOC paints and GREENGUARD® certified office furniture, the Freedom Center will house 1,000 government employees.
Ultimately, Mecklenburg County selected the Dividends Horizon® office system by Knoll for its ability to meet the functional, aesthetic and environmental requirements of the project. LEED Silver certification for Commercial Interiors is pending. The adaptive re-use of this 384,000-sq-ft structure involved a complete overhaul of the building.
The original mall, which had no windows, now features floor-to-ceiling glass walls—creating a light-filled work environment. The building now houses several state departments, all with a variety of needs. Dividends Horizon® workstations were able to adapt to these different departmental requirements. Workstations feature ergonomic and affordable Chadwick® chairs with Calibre® 3/10/10 pedestals and storage towers. Brightly-colored fabric panels complement interior paint colors and liven up the workspace.
