Don Chadwick designed the Spark Series on Knoll Director of Design Benjamin Pardo’s request for a lightweight, stackable plastic chair. Pardo was confident that Chadwick, one the premier ergonomics experts in the world, would bring maximum comfort and Knoll quality to the so-called “plastic stacker” category.
Chadwick: “the whole program is built around portability, stackability, and easy storage. But still providing a maximum amount of comfort. Each chair has its own personality. One looks much lighter in scale, the other one lower slung, a little bit wider, a little bit deeper — because the seating position for lounging is different from the more upright, attention-getting positions you’d have for a side chair or a dining chair. Also, we can dress the chair up or down depending on whether we apply a cushion to the seat, which gives variability in terms of color, texture and pattern, and gives more options to the use of the chair. I don’t know whether a chair becomes a so-called classic, but a good number of Knoll’s designs have been around for a long time, and hopefully this will have a good, long life.”
