Barcelona Chair in Knoll Velvet Flamenco

History of the Barcelona Chair

The history of the Barcelona Chair begins with its designer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies was born in Germany in 1886 and began his career at his father’s stonemasonry business, eventually establishing his own design office in Berlin in 1912. Mies became one of the most influential figures in modern furniture and architecture and was selected to design the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. The German Pavilion itself was a stunning example of the Bauhaus movement, with free-standing walls and planes. The Barcelona Chair was designed to be part of this display, “a monumental object” in its own right. This version had a bolted, chrome-plated frame with ivory pigskin cushions.

Following the International Exposition, the Barcelona Chair was first commercially produced in 1930 and then mass produced in 1931. Through this process, the Barcelona Chair’s design was improved to increase its stability and durability, as well as to make its appearance more seamless. However, mass production of the Barcelona Chair halted in 1934 with the events that led to the outbreak of World War II. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe fled Germany in 1938 and immigrated to the United States, where he became director of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

It was at IIT that Mies became an early mentor and tutor to Florence Knoll. This connection led to Mies granting Knoll, Inc. the rights to manufacture his entire collection of furniture in 1945. Knoll’s 1947 version of the Barcelona Chair was chrome-plated with leather cushions, which were tufted on one side and flat on the other. Stuffed with dense industrial foam, these cushions had distinctive thick welted piping. The Barcelona Chair continued to evolve as new materials became available, with stainless steel frames introduced in the 1960s and bronze-plated frames in the 1970s. Mies’ signature was added to the back right of the Barcelona Chair in the mid-1990s, helping differentiate it from copycats and authenticate it as an Original Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Design.
