Details
Jonathan Muecke approaches both furniture and sculpture with the goal of uncovering and articulating the inherent logic of his materials. The Muecke Side Table evolved from his desire to celebrate all characteristics of wood, including the end grain. He succeeded by rounding wood into dowels and devising a joinery method to connect them where they overlap. “You can understand the piece of wood,” he says. “It's not disguised. It's there for you to understand again and again.”

Jonathan Muecke

Jonathan Muecke (pronounced "Mickey”) was trained as an architect and earned his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. In his work, he thinks about objects as markers of human scale, and often works with a single material distilled to its fundamental elements. “I like to take things for what they are and not try to imagine what someone intended them to be,” he says.
