Influenced by fellow Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe quickly recognized the merits of tubular steel. Pairing the modern material with the classic form of nineteenth-century iron rocking chairs, he created the MR Lounge Chair in 1927. With its graceful curves and cantilevered structure, the chair takes a striking form that flexes to comfortably support the movements of the sitter. In 1948, Mies granted Knoll exclusive rights to produce his furniture, including the MR Series.
- Cantilevered seat gently bounces with the sitter’s movements.
- Seamless tubular steel frame with polished chrome finish.
- Leather cushion crafted in a series of quilted sections.
- Cushion is attached with leather straps that match color of cushion.
- An original Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Design, the frame is stamped with the Knoll logo and designer’s signature.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
A hugely influential figure in design history, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe brought a less-is-more approach to everything he designed, from furniture to skyscrapers. He taught at the Bauhaus and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and was a trusted mentor to Florence Knoll. Mies’ buildings—including the Seagram Building, IIT Campus, and Farnsworth House—changed the face of American architecture.
