Joseph D Urso 1980
Celebrated minimalist and internationally renowned interior designer Joseph D’Urso first translated his signature aesthetic to furniture for Knoll in 1980. One of those pieces was the D’Urso Occasional Table, offered in a choice of three sizes. Its functional design, industrial materials, and concealed casters are consistent with the high-tech design movement of the 1970s and reflect D’Urso’s preference for objects that look more engineered than styled.
Clean lines
Durably constructed of welded steel with polished and glossy finishes, the D’Urso Occasional Table picks up reflections of objects around it and becomes part of the overall environment. The way it interacts with other things takes it beyond what it is.
Discreet mobility
Concealed casters make the table easy to move—whether for cleaning or reconfiguring a floorplan—and create lightness in how it floats slightly off the floor.
When Joseph D’Urso can’t find the furniture he needs for an interior design project, he designs it himself. In 1980 he needed a large-scale coffee table for a client’s New York City loft, but everything on the market was made for small seating arrangements. In addition, he wanted a table on wheels so his client could reconfigure the space as needed. The D’Urso Occasional Table began as one table for one client, but its mix of mobility and scale caught the eye of the Knoll design director, who collaborated with D’Urso to make it part of the portfolio.
Joseph Paul D’Urso, who studied design at Pratt Institute, Royal College of Art in London and Manchester College of Art, is widely acknowledged as a leader of the high-tech design movement of the 1970s. While helping to define minimalist principles for living, he expanded design vocabulary with new materials and graphic, streamlined forms.
