In its latest issue, London-based design monthly Wallpaper* magazine profiled the design and furniture of the new restaurant and bar at the Seagram Building in New York, the iconic 1958 glass-and-steel skyscraper by architect and Knoll designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Profiling property developer Aby Rosen, the current landlord of the Seagram Building, Wallpaper* recounts the changes that will be made to the dining and bar areas that housed the former Four Seasons Restaurant, which for decades was a pivotal establishment in the New York dining scene.
Keen to recapture the original aura of the space, Rosen and his partners have preserved Richard Lippold's brass sculpture above the bar and reissued designs from Knoll that originally graced the rooms, from the Brno Chair designed by Mies van der Rohe, its cantilevered structure finished in bronze, to the Tulip Stool and Side Table designed by Eero Saarinen.
Additionally, Wallpaper* reports, "the powder-coated 'Four Seasons' banquette seating, upholstered in David Adjaye's 'Kampala' fabric, is also a special reissue by Knoll."
For Rosen, the project is all about balancing the best of the old with the most exciting of the new. "We inject so much love and care into the place," he told Wallpaper*. "We want it to be upbeat, a place people can come and hear live music and stay late into the night."
