Sam Chermayeff

Sam Chermayeff is an architect, designer, and educator who takes a thoughtful, space-driven approach to the environments and objects he designs. He is a founding partner and director of the architecture firms June 14 Meyer-Grohbrügge & Chermayeff and Sam Chermayeff Office. With offices in New York and Berlin, the studios work on housing, interiors, and furniture, continually exploring new ways to address how people live—both apart and together.

Chermayeff began his architectural career at SANAA / Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa where he worked on built and curatorial work, including the 2009 Serpentine Pavilion and the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale. He studied architecture at the University of Texas at Austin and the Architectural Association in London, and has taught at Columbia GSAPP, MSA Münster, The Royal College of Art, DIA, Dessau, Cornell University and the Architectural Association.

Chermayeff’s connection to the Knoll legacy is personal: his father, Ivan Chermayeff, together with Tom Geismar, developed Knoll’s graphic identity standards in the early 1990s.
