Florence Knoll™ Credenza

Before Florence Knoll and the Knoll Planning Unit, executive offices were planned almost identically—a method Florence found illogical. Needing better private-office storage, she designed a credenza that could be specified to complement both the desk and the architecture, creating a unified interior. “I did it because I needed the piece of furniture for a job and it wasn’t there, so I designed it,” Florence said. The Florence Knoll Credenza comes in three sizes with multiple door and drawer configurations.

Iris Lacquer, Dark Python Lacquer, and Dark Red Ultra Lacquer bring new appreciation to the perfect proportions and immaculate details of the cases.

Recalibrating the modern office

Florence Knoll revolutionized private office design by replacing the typical executive desk—with bulky drawers on each side—with a clean and simple table desk. The switch created a streamlined, sophisticated workspace, but items previously stored in desk drawers needed a home. Her solution was to design a storage credenza to be placed behind the table desk, thus maximizing the available space for collaboration and meetings. By taking an architectural approach to the layout, Florence Knoll improved functionality and brought holistic elegance to the office interior.

After demonstrating an early interest in architecture, Florence Schust was enrolled at the Kingswood School for Girls, adjacent to the Cranbrook Academy of Art. There she met Eilel Saarinen, and went on to study under some of the greatest 20th century architects, including Gropius, Breuer, and Mies van der Rohe.

With Florence’s design skills and her husband Hans’ business acumen and salesmanship, the pair grew Knoll into an international arbiter of style and design. In creating the revolutionary Knoll Planning Unit, Florence Knoll defined the standard for the modern corporate interiors of post-war America.

Drawer and door fronts in same wood veneers or lacquer finish as body. All have polished aluminum pulls, top flush mounted storage doors with magnetic closures. Drawer and storage have matching veneer inside.
