1941 Introducing Jens Risom

As Hans expands the scope of his company to include interior design projects, he hires a young Danish designer named Jens Risom to help with space planning. The present state of custom interior design leads Risom to design new pieces of furniture for specific projects. This is the original Knoll furniture.

1942 The First Collection

The first Knoll Catalog is printed. It includes a few remaining imported pieces, but is comprised primarily of new furniture designed specifically for Knoll by Jens Risom.

[+] With wartime materials restrictions, Risom had to be clever and economical in his designs. He developed a line of furniture that could be constructed with pieces of scrap wood and discarded nylon webbing from parachute factories. Hans found small shops around the city that were not approved for war production and enlisted them to build the new pieces. Selected pieces of the original collection are still manufactured by Knoll today.
